How do you reconcile the spirit of the underground with commercial success? Designer duo, Mike Latta and Zoe Eckhaus stick to what they already do well: creating unusual items that never fail to raise eyebrows. Having gone from a niche, cultic brand, to industry sweethearts worn by Kim Kardashian and various other reality TV stars, Eckhaus Latta aims to maintain a nonchalant, uber-cool aesthetic that turns fashion standards upside down, from the outside or from within.

Following the spectacular success of their recently opened exhibition, Possessed at the Whitney Museum of American Art, for the Spring Summer 2019 season the designers came up with a show that strikes the right balance between highly unusual items and wardrobe staples. We find plenty of their trademark, distressed knitwear pieces, including revealing, tightly clad dresses and skirts that come in subdued, pastel colours, off-white, light neon, and dark chestnut shades. These are presented alongside some truly extravagant, beaded vests and chokers, some see-through shirts made of raffia, and a white, drawstring dress that looks equally Victorian straight-jacket-esque but ultimately sexy. Having taken on the ever-popular office wear trend, the designer duo also offers cinched waist blazers and tye dye pants that will surely see you through from your desk to dinner.

Some wonder whether Eckhaus Latta will withstand the hardship of commercial success. For a brand so insistent on its cutting-edge ethos and its outsiderdom from the fashion industry – the disruption of clothing standards has always been key- we don’t have doubts. With the Spring Summer 2019 collection, the duo proved that the mentality of the avant-garde is still alive.
