Karis Miller

I’m Karis, a 22-year-old illustrator from Liverpool, currently based in London. I recently graduated from University of the Arts London with a degree in Illustration.

During my final year of university, I started my own freelance illustration business, creating portraits in various styles for people around the globe. I also designed logos for self-established and upcoming businesses like myself.

Some of the key strengths that make me stand out of the crowd as an illustrator are my diversity and adaptability. I have a high standard of work across many styles and mediums. This allows me to create work with a client on a more negotiable and personal level. It also means I can work on different types of projects and still provide the high quality work that’s needed.

This year I worked with ‘Four Corners Books’ on creating my own contemporary illustrations for Robert Louis Stevenson’s, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I also created my own picture book; Ellie and Mopple. Inspired by my passion for bringing literature to life, I developed this book into artwork for my own tv show of the same name. Alongside being a freelance illustrator, I would like to pursue a career in the visual development industry.

Sophie Rees

I grew up near Abergavenny in South Wales, surrounded by the Brecon Beacons National Park which instilled a love of nature and exploration. I studied Fine Art Painting in both Bath and Brighton before moving to East London where In 2009 I co-founded a studio and exhibition complex in Hackney Wick, a regeneration area of East London opposite the 2012 Olympic stadium.

It is here I began curating exhibitions and project managing events such as a monthly design market for designer-makers living in the local area. From this, I founded the agency Designers/Makers which has grown to become a national membership organisation; providing events, PR, business advice, an online shop and opportunities for its members. Working in partnership with other creative organisations such as The Design Museum.

The London Artisan event runs quarterly at Old Truman Brewery and showcases 60 contemporary designers working across jewellery, textiles, ceramics, print and furniture. In September my first book ‘Artisan Bristol’ will be available; a culmination of interviews and photographs I have taken with 25 makers living and working within Bristol.

My day to day routine varies enormously, juggling my painting practise with emails, meetings, website admin and social media.
