Working from home has so many bonuses, but living and working in the same four walls can become frustrating and claustrophobic. However when it comes to venturing out of the house in search of a new workspace, finding the right spot can be a delicate process. We’ve been on the hunt for the perfect cafés to work in, and here are our top five picks:

5. The Beehive

Linked to Kahaila cafe (see last time’s Shoreditch edition), The Beehive is a social enterprise cafe and community hub, working closely with local charities to help support vulnerable people in Tower Hamlets. The space consists of a well kept window-fronted café, a lounge area downstairs with an array of armchairs, bookshelves, board games and also a ‘one-wall-gallery’, on which they invite local artists to hang their work. They are very reasonably priced, serving Climpson and Sons coffee as well as guest coffees, and an array of homemade cakes, with a range of vegan and gluten-free options. This is one to watch – they’re soon to be opening a coworking space upstairs too!

4. New Road Hotel

This hotel has a lot to offer for freelancers. The ground floor is quiet and spacious, with plenty of different seating options, and is open as a free hot-desking space (with a free coffee for workers too!). Through wecoffee.io you can also access their daily price plans (from £9.50/day), which include unlimited refreshments and meals too. The ground floor also has a stylish meeting room available for hire, with a kitchen, smartboard, and capacity of 25 people. Upstairs there is a small and peaceful library, available to anyone looking for a quiet and focused space to read or work. There is an all-day restaurant, bar and cereal grind too, so you can tuck into a nostalgic mixture of your favourite cereals brands while you work!

3. St. Margaret’s House

St. Margaret’s House is a community space, taking up three doors of this terraced street just opposite the gardens of the V&A. Inside, there is a café, yoga studio, charity shop and an arts/events space, as well as a large garden at the back. The not-for-profit award-winning vegan cafe is open 8am-8pm each day and offers a bustling and sociable environment, perfect if you’re looking for a relaxed and bubbling space to work or hold a casual meeting. On Fridays, they offer a fantastic deal to freelancers – for just £1 per hour you can take part in their ‘Coworking Fridays’, located in the Create Centre, which offers reliable wifi, tea/coffee and kitchen access, as well as a meeting room and a peaceful environment to work in. A deal well worth taking!

2. Stour Space

The walk from the bus stop is one of those journeys that led me to seriously question the faith we put into google maps. It tells me that somewhere deep in this sprawl of abandoned, graffiti-sprayed buildings and construction works lies a homely and artistic hub. “Hmmm,” I think to myself, as I near the end of the street. However rounding the corner my assumptions are corrected – lying right on the canal is a lively venue, converted from an old industrial warehouse. On the ground floor is a comfy café, and upstairs there is a coworking space which is totally free to use (on the assumption that you will indulge in the treats on offer downstairs…) They are well priced, with a £5 unlimited filter coffee deal for those staying for the long haul, and all profits are returned to enable free yoga classes and workshops to take place in the building. There are several rooms which can be used for running classes, meetings, workshops, studios, exhibitions and events, so this building has so much to offer for freelancers. They’re running an ongoing crowdfunding project to help secure the space for the future, and with so much going on, it’s definitely a project worth supporting.

1. Husk

Stepping off of the polluted pavements of Commercial Road into the calm hum of Husk feels like stepping into someone’s (very spacious) home. The café is split into two sections, with a space at the back where people are encouraged to keep noise levels low for a more focused atmosphere, perfect for working. The place is furnished with quirky mismatched second-hand sofas, armchairs and coffee tables, and the menu includes a range of vegetarian food, as well as elaborate homemade cakes, coffees, and smoothies. They describe themselves as a creative space, with a gallery space, studio space, and meeting room, and they also offer a range of classes and workshops, from English classes to mother and baby singing workshops. The atmosphere is fun, diverse and welcoming, and a lovely environment to get stuck into your own projects.
