HMRC softens tax rule changes for freelancers following ‘contractor chaos’ (The Telegraph)

HMRC has decided to reevaluate the changes to their tax rules for contractors due to backlash from the self-employed community against the IR35 reforms.

The changes, set to be introduced for off-payroll workers, will now only apply to contracts that begin after April 6th, so your current role as a contractor won’t be affected.

HMRC said these changes come as a result of a Treasury review of the reforms after heavy criticism.

A campaigner against the changes to IR35, Dave Chaplin, said: “I sense that this is the Treasury and HMRC now realising that they have a major problem on their hands and the implementation of the legislation will not be smooth.

“It is highly indicative of the damaging chaos we are seeing.”

IR35 private sector reforms: Research suggests 75% of contractors will leave posts by April 2020 (Computer Weekly)

75% of contractors are predicted to leave their positions before the IR35 reforms take hold in eight weeks time.

These findings come from research undertaken by the OffPayroll.org.uk website, who collated anonymous feedback from contractors commenting on how their clients’ behaviour is changing towards them due to the IR35 reforms.

Out of the 1,500+ website users surveyed, 75% said they plan on either leaving their contractor role with immediate effect or move overseas for work opportunities.

The IR35 reforms come into effect 6th April 2020.

Mortgage ‘access gap’ impacting the self-employed (Property Reporter)

Research from mortgage broker Trussle has found that self-employed people struggle to get their mortgage applications approved by lenders.

Want advice on getting a mortgage as a freelancer? We’ve partnered up with our friends at Trussle to bring you a workshop to help you avoid common mistakes and get lenders to approve your mortgage application on 12th March at the UnderPinned HQ.

According to Miles Robinson, Head of Mortgages at Trussle: ”The government encourages entrepreneurship, but the mortgage industry is not keeping pace with how fast the self-employed sector is expanding. This group is being let down time and time again with a challenging and confusing mortgage journey, which is resulting in fewer mortgages being approved by lenders.

“Enough is enough. The industry must work collaboratively to update its requirements and close this “mortgage access gap” to support the self-employed.

We’re using our own data to design flexible products for specific under-served groups, like the self-employed. This will be a significant step in our commitment to making mortgages fairer for all.”

MP invites views on IR35 as protest planned  (FT Adviser)

Tim Farron MP, member for Westmorland and Lonsdale, is meeting with MPs and members of the public today to discuss issues surrounding the IR35 tax rules, after a planned protest to Stop the Off-Payroll Tax campaign takes place outside the Houses of Parliament.

Dave Chaplin, director of the Stop the Off-Payroll Tax campaign and orchestrating the protest, said: “The government is pushing ahead with the off-payroll tax roll out despite the damage this is already causing and despite a general election campaign commitment by the chancellor, Sajid Javid, to conduct a proper review of the flawed IR35 legislation.

“It’s time for this government to work with, instead of attacking, UK contracting and we hope MPs will help persuade them to stop the roll out and work with the sector going forward.”
